The Nimitz Hotel, built in 1852, is now a museum dedicated to the millions who served under Admiral Nimitz. The last U.S. five-star admiral was born in Fredericksburg in 1885. The evolving center now also includes the nearby George Bush Gallery, Plaza of Presidents, Japanese Garden of Peace, Veteran's Walk of Stones, Pacific Combat Zone, the Center for Pacific War Studies, and a fine bookstore. Museum buildings and grounds house America's premier collection of large artifacts (aircraft tanks, guns, etc.) related to the major battles of the Pacific War.
